Bahirdar is an attractive 20thc town marked with its palm lined avenues and the blue of the lake in the background. A home for Lake Tana dotted with not less than 30 islands, on many of, which are found churches, unique monasteries and spectacular bird’s life. It is also the source of the Blue Nile, a fact that may explain many of Ethiopia’s links with the ancient world. Even today, the papyrus tankwa that sail the lake bear a striking resemblance to the boats of Ancient Egypt. This spot is accessed with modern cruise from the city. The magnificent Blue Nile Falls locally known as Tissisat (smoking water) is also set here.
