Gondar, named as “the Camelot of Africa”, is famous for its 17thc imperial compound with distinguished fairytale castles and churches, particularly Debre Berhan Selassie church where the walls and ceiling are completely covered in murals. Timket (Epiphany) is celebrated colorfully by thousands of pilgrims at the site of the medieval royal bath of King Fasiledus annually during the season of January with a special ceremony. Gondar is also a base to visit the UNESCO registered site of the Simien Mountains National Park called as “the Roof of Africa”.
